Clearly, I should have watched this show [ChihayaFuru] earlier. The vibe strongly reminds me of Hikaru No Go. Chihaya reminds me of Hikaru, Taichi of Akira, and Arata of Sai — but they’re all different too. It is nice to see a traditionally shonen game/sport/competition type series with a female lead. Seeing the clearly shoujo slant to it, I like that there is also a female lead who is also unapologetic in her lack of femininity. In a very CCS Sakura sort of way, she adores and embraces people for being different and/or better than her in things. It’s a pleasant vibe sort of series that I enjoy. I’m just going too keep my happy little AU/fanon theory that Chihayafuru is secretly a reincarnation-based sequel to Hikaru No Go.
Arata is the reincarnation of Sai: He is the best and most passionate player striving for perfection and (un)consciously both inspiring and challenging those around him. His “game” has been surrounded by tragedy that that prevented him from playing for a while, but now he has returned due to the efforts and support of Chihaya/Hikaru and Taichi/Akira.
Chihaya is Hikaru: She is Arata/Sai’s best and most naturally-gifted student who is the closest to him. Her air-headed and thoughtless actions unintentionally hurt those around her while also challenging them to improve as she constantly moves forward while only looking towards Arata/Sai’s back.
Taichi is Akira: An excellent player from a rich family, but not due to natural talent like Chihaya/Hikaru. He has some talent and has surpassed nearly everyone on hard work and passion alone. However, because he is always looking towards the seemingly unsurpassable Chihaya/Hikaru and Arata/Sai, he underestimates his own gifts and trips on his own insecurities.
